Bar’s liquor license suspended for hosting beer pong tournament

Touchdown Cafe, Ann Arbor MI

Don’t archaic laws ruin all the fun?

Touchdown Cafe in Ann Arbor, MI will have its liquor license suspended, starting today, for hosting a beer pong tournament. The suspension will last five days. Apparently, Michigan law states that bars cannot hold contests, games or tournaments in which alcohol is consumed. The owners of Touchdown Cafe (as well as a lot of Michigan students) are confused, as well they should be - participation in the tournament did not require the consumption of beer. Some drank water instead and some didn’t drink at all. Therefore, the bar should have been on the right side of the law.

Sadly, this is just the case of another poorly written law. It would make sense if people were forced to down beer after beer to be involved in the tournament, but they had the choice of what they wanted to drink, if anything at all. If alcohol can’t be involved in games, period, well then - we might as well yank it from the casinos, too. I hope this bar gets its license back with an apology.
